Day 1: The Beginning

It was a warm yet wintry day. The snow had been melting for a few hours, the sun just past its zenith and beginning its descent into the west. Three students and a teaching fellow ambled over to a river birch tree, excited to view the five-trunked beauty in all of its glory. Pictures did not do it justice: the five-meter-tall tree stood slim, looking over the students and the walkway they had just come from. Situated between itinerant stairs and path, not frequently used due to the decrease in traffic from the COVID-19 pandemic, Tina the river birch watched with her branches stretching high into the sky. After measurements of its diameter at breast height and its standing height, the students took a picture in front of Tina. This was only the beginning of a journey that had only one sense of direction: learning.
